Causes of Tooth Loss

An oral maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Rocky Cullens has extensive experience treating issues that affect the jaw and teeth. Specifically, Dr. Rocky Cullens performs surgery as a way to address such problems as tooth loss.

Tooth loss can occur as a result of a variety of causes. Some people, for instance, have congenitally missing teeth from an adult tooth not replacing a baby tooth. However, a much more likely cause of missing teeth is a dental condition like periodontal disease, which leads to bone loss that may result in compromised teeth either falling out or needing to be pulled. Cavities can also progress to the point of tooth loss.

Separately, tooth loss might occur as a result of some type of trauma to the mouth and jaw, such as a fall. Sometimes the tooth is knocked out of the mouth as a result of the event; other times the tooth remains in the mouth but eventually has to be removed because the structure of the root is affected. In cases of a car accident or blunt-force injury, however, both the teeth and jaw may be severely damaged, and the individual might require jaw reconstruction in addition to efforts to replace the missing teeth.
