As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at Stonewood Hills Oral Maxillofacial Surgery in Broken Arrow, Oklahomca, Dr. Rocky Cullens accepts a variety of cases related to the mouth, jaw, and teeth.
The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is a ball-and-socket joint that forms the functional anatomy of the jaw. Deterioration of this joint due to trauma or disease can lead to severe pain and a loss of function. Some patients benefit from replacement of the joint.
The joint replacement itself uses many of the same surgical-grade materials as in other joint replacement procedures. The patient receives the implant while under general anesthesia. The surgeon typically makes two incisions, one for each component. Most patients spend one day in the hospital, then have an extended recovery period that may involve physical therapy.
